“From Finding Dance in Toronto’s Black Population at Mid-century to a New Search in Montreal in 2017: The Multiple Potentials of Dance Focused Inquiry”

The role of social and theatrical dance in Canada’s Black populations in the 1950s is largely undocumented. Through reflection on long-term research in Toronto and more recent inquiry in Montreal, I will speak to the potentials of dance research to address historical omissions of marginalized populations in order to re-focus contemporary perceptions of presence and participation.

Friday, November 10

This seminar builds on Dr. Boye’s keynote address, through a broader discussion of dance and the archive, research methodologies, and embodied pedagogies.
